Feeling the warmth when they hold a loved one is something for which people should not be judged. It should not matter what sex their partner is because, put simply, they are in love. The gay rights movement is a continuing procession that fights for their rights. The gay rights movement actually begins on November 11, 1950 when gay rights activist Harry Hay founds America’s first national gay rights organization by the name of Mattachine Society, according to the â€Å"Timeline: Milestones in the American Gay Rights Movement†. Their leaders or people who advanced their purpose are Harvey Milk, Harry Hay, LGBT, or lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual groups. Matthew Shepard then goes on to become one reason to cause the HCPA, Hate Crimes Prevention Act, to be signed into l aw on October 28, 2009. These groups say that â€Å"the struggles of the peoples of the world are our fight as well; their victories are our victories and our victories are theirs. Our freedom will come only with their freedom† (â€Å"What We Want, What We Believe† 600). They are trying to abolish hate against all which is why they did not stop at creating a hate crimes prevention act against gays law, but a prevention to protect everyone. It is to prevent anyone having to suffer what the people of the LGBT community constantly face every day. To take these things lightly is one thing; however, to completely act as though they do not exist in plain sight is unlawful or even disgraceful.As a nation, everyone should band together, every race, every group, and every individual, to fight against this true act of treason. It consists of innumerable defining characteristics that make up the whole of who we are in any given moment. Today more than ever we are being increasingly conditioned, influenced and bombarded by a multitude of messages and experiences about who to be and how to be. Current forms of social communication processes, particularly mainstream media, advertising, television and film, along with family, friends, teachers, political agendas, religion, society’s rules, our perceptions, perspectives, interpretations and assumptions, and those of others, all play a part in creating our identity. ?We seek and create our identity through these external influences, we all wear these masks and cloaks, so that we fit in with the world around us. The degree to which we choose our identity, versus having it imposed on us via external influence, is arguably a matter of consciousness and awareness. When we are unaware of the power of external influence we are akin to pieces of clay, being unconsciously molded to fit into the accepted or preferred norms of someone else’s reality. When we are aware we can take responsibility for the creation of our identity. We can make empowered choices that best serve our selves, rather than serve people and systems outside of ourselves. In Unpolished Gem, society plays a daunting role on Alice as she tries to change her way of thinking from a Chinese-Cambodian way of thinking to a very different Australian way of thinking. As Alice starts her new school her beliefs are tested as she tries to determine whether to fit in as an Australian or a Chinese-Cambodian. By trying to decide this she is under massive pressure because of our society’s stereo types. Gender and race are two of the most important factors to take into consideration when looking at an individual’s identity, as they are the very first two things you notice about a person when you meet them. Race is a very strong influence on one’s identity. This can cause issues with racism; people affiliating themselves, therefore their identity, with groups that feel a certain way about another race or group. Just as with gender, people will make assumption about a person based on their race. If one is white people might assume they listen to country music or rock n roll; or if one is black people might assume they listen to rap or hip hop. These tie in with stereotypes, which sadly, are a part of our community today. There are a higher number of certain races in certain places, with also leads to how culture affects one’s identity. Something that relates closely with race is language. A person’s language is part of their identity too. It can show where they were raised because of the slang you use. For example, there is the Spanish language, and off of that original Spanish language there is branches of adjusted languages. Some of these include Mexican Spanish or North Mexican Spanish. All of these are based off the standard Spanish language, but depending on where one was raised they may speak one of these ifferent variations of Spanish. This helps us identify people too, based on which one they speak, shows where they are from which is part of your identity. In Unpolished Gem the stereo typical view on people from an Chinese-Cambodian background is to excel at school and this weighs Alice down by putting enormous pressure on her because that is what is considered acceptable in a t ight knit community. Culture: Culture is the combination of values, beliefs, and practices of a particular group. The culture each person lives in shows them how to dress, talk, and act, acceptable behavior, and gives a guideline of what is considered acceptable and normal. As a child grows up in a particular culture they absorb the beliefs, and practices, then begin to use them in everyday activities. The culture a person is surrounded by will then play a role in the development of their identity. Identity is essentially a set a characteristics and traits that are attributed to one specific person. One of the main things your culture affects in shaping your identity is your morals. Morals are a person’s standards of behavior or beliefs concerning what is and is not acceptable for them to do. These morals shape our identity as they shape how we live our lives as well as how we make an impact of society. In Unpolished Gem, Alice has a strong sense of what can be tolerated in both cultures from an Asian oblique migrant perspective even though throughout the book she starts to lose her ability to think in Chinese. This is an example of how even though a person may be proud of their cultural background this still out weights trying fit in or adapt to a new way of life. For example, Alice and her family migrate to Australia to peruse the â€Å"Australian dream† which indicates that even though they have a different cultural background to Australian they have to adapt to the Australian culture in order to survive. In conclusion our individual identity is determined by many different factors like media, society, culture and race. These factors shape who we are and whom we grow up to be and how other people see us from day to day. Normal social expectations Essay In Mary Shelleys debut novel she uses the character Frankenstein, and his failure of social expectations in his creation of his creature to criticize society on many different levels. In my opinion this was Shelleys main aim in the writing of such an original and cunning novel. Therefor the way Shelly portrays Frankenstein outside the social expectations in his creation of the creature is extremely important, in class we have looked at this issue closely and in this essay I will further explore just how Shelley does this. Shelley represents the character Frankenstein as a very poor parent. Shelly tells us about how he leaves the creature, this is his first main failure of the social expectations. It is important to take care of anything you choose to take responsibility for or create. His departure of his quarters to the streets alone is not near to being level with the social expectations towards a parent or creator. Comments such as I issued into the streets, pacing them with quick steps, as if I sought to avoid the wretch whom I feared every turning of the street would present to my view are not the comments of someone who is facing up to responsibility and caring for the living being he had just created. He quite clearly does not have any intentions of showing any affection or parenting for his creation, this is clear to anyone that Shelley is telling her readers that Frankenstein is falling outside its social expectations in the early stages of her novel. Shelly goes on to describe how matters get worse when Frankenstein meets his old friend Cleval and forgets any existence of the creature for a moment, once again Walton dictates a very selfish and what will become a familiar comment and in a moment forgot my horror and misfortune. Shelly goes on to mention nothing of Frankenstein teaching, caring or even acknowledging it creatures existence. This once again falls very short of the expectations society has for a satisfactory creator. Responsibly to his already exiting family is another major point how Shelley keeps Frankenstein falling outside social expectations. One of the most tragic events in the novel is when William is murdered, this is a key pint in the novel as it is where Frankenstein falls way out of his depth, before this point Frankenstein could put things right but now he can only improve the already very tragic situation. From whichever way you look at it Frankenstein has a responsibility to be honest with his family. Yet Shelley chooses to make the character more to blame and in some ways more interesting by him holding the truth away from his family. He has a personal and social responsibility to admit at least some fault in Williamss death, consequently saving Justines life. At one point Frankenstein almost comes clean You are all mistaken. I know the murderer. Justine, poor, good Justine is innocent at this point Shelly leads the reader into the thoughts that maybe her Character is going to fulfill his responsibilitys and act the way society expects him to act be honest. Alas he does not and justice proceeds on Justine. Shelley persists in representing Frankenstein as feeling genuine heartfelt remorse, A thousand times rather would I have confessed myself guilty of the crime ascribed to Justine but this is not as genuine as it may seem as Shelley dose not proceed to describe Frankensteins sorry with a confession. Instead he goes on with more lies and deceits. I think Shelley meant These chain of events to be the worse behavior of Victor Frankenstein, although more people go on to die and in arguably a worse fashion, on this occasion he lies to his friends, family, the court and just about fails on every social expectation that lies upon him.

During this paper I will discuss five different types of technology that I consider to be breakthrough and changed the way society lives in a positive manner. The computer changed the way almost everything is done for the world. It made calculations, communication, storage for individuals and businesses faster, better, and more efficient. The evolution of the computer has come a long way since then, and has changed how everything Is done. It has made the phone and postal mall almost obsolete In certain cases, because It makes It faster and easier to complete certain tasks that would take much longer doing by the human brain and/or hands. The computer also made the typewriter obsolete with its ability to generate paperwork faster, cleaner, and easier to go back and edit. The second biggest technology breakthrough Id like to discuss is the internet. A government developed in the ass, which later was decided to benefit to the public changed everything including advancing the use of the computer even more. : One main reason the internet is a breakthrough is research. The internet is overloaded with useful information which is available at the click of a button. Students rarely need to visit a library anymore because all the Information can be obtained through search engine within seconds from the comfort of their home. It some cases a student even download a book to read rather than purchase or rent from the library which saves money and time. Businesses use features such as emails or electronic transactions to buy/sell products by the Internet making It easier for consumers and other businesses to do business. This allows for more revenue and faster turnaround for everyone. Email is used to communicate rather than by mail. What used to take days to come by posted mail now takes seconds. The internet can be used even for easier communication such as meetings via internet. Instead of traveling to do business or discuss matters with other people or businesses voices and live video feed can be used with computers and the internet at a moments notice. Now even with internet connections available wirelessly from practically anywhere it has become even that much more efficient and convenient. The release of the first automotive GAPS system was in the early asss which is said to be by Honda. The GAPS system is replacing the common map and websites such as Manifest. Current models allow users to plan a trip at he use of a touch screen device that has up to date maps. GAPS system can display travel time, distance, step by step directions, direct users with a computerized voice, warn of traffic patterns, accidents, construction, etc. ND provide alternate routes. This makes driving safer, faster, and gives a feeling of peace of mind. Drivers dont have to try and read a map while driving or get stuck in traffic ever again. The GAPS system now even comes standard some newer vehicles built into the center console with other features such as something simple as a CD player. GAPS systems are now also used by businesses as well and have helped a great de al. Businesses who are involved in automotive transportation or deliveries use GAPS systems to plan daily routes making them faster and more efficient. This makes it that much better for the buyer and seller. It also allows for improved fuel efficiency by shortening travel times. With the issues we have with oil/gas prices currently that can help make an impact on your average driver or a business. The final breakthrough in my opinion is the creation of the MR. machine. This machine invented in the asss by Dry. Damning changed the medical industry forever. This device has saved many lives and I personally have received the benefits of this machine. The MR. allows for a full internal scan of the human body with the use of magnets. It can catch early signs of diseases such as cancer or internal infections. Early detection of cancer using MR. machines has many lives and made the road to recovery much smoother for patients. If it wasnt for Mrs. I most likely would have lost my Uncle to lung cancer. The MR. caught early signs of cancer and allowed for plenty of time to correct the problem and prevent his early death. This is Just one of many of the benefits of an MR. machine.

In some cases people choose to seek priva te health care, if they can afford it, but they are often upset about having to pay for both private health care and the public health care they are opting out of. Many people do not like the feeling that they are paying for the health care of other people who get sick more frequently or are less healthy. Another concern with the United Kingdom's public health care system is that patients are often waitlisted to see doctors for pressing matters; this has led to unnecessary deaths. (Browne, 2001). Putting the private versus public funding debate aside momentarily, there appears also to be discrepancy in the total amount of combined public and private money spent on health care between the United States and the United Kingdom. Based on the previously discussed statistics, the United States spends 15.4% of GDP on its health care while the United Kingdom spends a considerably lower 8.1% of GDP on health care. In terms of what this means for each individual residing in these countries, while per capita GDP in the United States is $41,890 and $6,096 of that is spent on health care, per capita GDP in the United Kingdom is a slightly lower $36,509 but a significantly lower amount, only $2,560 per capita is spent on health care. By having everyone contribute a little bit to the entire society's health care, it appears that health care becomes significantly cheaper for everyone. Mekkah Mekkah is the holy place for Muslims. They have a rule that you must be a Muslims to enter Mekkah. It is most important place to Muslims because, it is were Muhammad live years ago. During he month of Ramadan Muslims must fast (not eat or drink) from dawn to dusk. Adults eat breakfast before daylight and then nothing until dinner after sunset. Part of the reason for Ramadan is to make us aware of the needs of others. There are some people who are permitted to eat during daylight; they are pregnant women, to keep their baby healthy, and women who are feeding their babies. Also the very young or very old are permitted to eat. If you are a sportsman/woman and are training a lot in the day you are allowed to drink. The sick and disabled are also allowed to eat and drink. Birth This is what happens when a baby is born:- The first ceremony takes place as soon as a baby is born. We believe that a child is a gift from Allah and must be brought into the faith as quickly as possible. The baby is washed and the call to prayer is whispered in its right ear. A second call to worship is whispered in the babies left ear. Next honey or a piece of sugar is placed on the babies tongue as a sign of a happy life. Marriage A Muslim marriage is usally a lot of fun, with partys and colourful cloths. Many marriages are arranged by the brides farther, although our law is that the bride cannot be forced to get marred. The wedding ceremony is not a religious ceremony. The man proposes, and the woman accepts in front of witnesses. They both sign a contract (document) to make it legal. Also the man gives the bride a sum of money that is only the brides to spend. Death This is what happens at a burial or death:- When a person dies, the body is wrapped in white sheets and buried as soon as possible. Friend call on family to show there respect and support. Muslims believe that one day the dead will rise to life and be judged by Allah. It is to be said that the good will go to paradise, and all the others will go to ever lasting fire. Mosque The word Mosque comes from an Arabic word, meaning Place of Prostration. It is the house of prayer, where Muslims gather together to worship Allah. There are many different styles of Mosque, and they reflect the traditional architecture of the countries in which they are found, however, all of them share common design features. Perhaps the most distinctive element of a Mosque is its minaret, the tall slender tower designed to be seen from a distance as a reminder of Allahs presence. Before you enter a Mosque you must be clean all over, e.g. wash hands, legs and arms etc. You must also take off your shoes for cleanliness and health. Conclusion I learnt too much in this topic to right it all down, so I will give some ideas of what I learnt. Discuss one or more theories of Moral Understanding and evaluate its conclusions

The term morality, according to Shaffer (1993) means â€Å"a set of principles or ideals that help the individual to distinguish right from wrong and to act on this distinction. Morality is important to society, as it would not function effectively unless there is some agreement of what is right and wrong. There are many underlying processes and environmental factors, which limit or promote social, cognitive and moral development in children. In modern society, television could be considered to be one of the major influences on a child’s moral development. There are three approaches to moral development; the cognitive approach, the psychodynamic approach and the social learning theory. The Cognitive-Developmental approach of Piaget and Kohlberg studies how children become more able to reason morally and make moral judgements, whereas the Freud’s psychodynamic approach is more concerned with the development of the conscience and moral feelings such as guilt and anxiety. The social learning theory of Bandura and Mischel investigates the development of moral behaviour and how role models in the family, society and the media, influence it. The theory I am going to discuss is Piaget’s Cognitive-Developmental Approach. His theory of moral development is concerned with how the child’s moral knowledge and understanding change with age. Piaget saw morality as any system of rules, which governs interaction between people. The methods of investigation he used to develop his theories were, he looked at the way children imposed rules in their games. He used games to study the development of children’s moral development as he thought that by studying rules in the context of a game, he could study the child’s spontaneous though directly. He also, assessed changes in the child’s moral judgements by telling hypothetical stories about children who lied, stole or broke something. When using hypothetical stories, Piaget was generally more interested in the reasons why the children give the answers they did and not particularly the answers. Piaget identifies stages of moral development just as he identified stages with cognitive development. His theories of the way children think and their moral reasoning goes through a series of stages, as they are adapting to the world, these are also known as the processes of accommodation and assimilation. He believed that as children’s reasoning about the world changes when they grow older and gain more experience, so does their reasoning about morality. Their ability to think about the world in more complex ways is what causes them to move on from one stage to the next. This is known as cognitive development. Piaget stated that infants don’t understand much about morality until they are about three or four years of age. Their development divides into two main stages after infancy. His stages of moral development are: Pre Moral Stage (up to three or four years) Children don’t understand about rules, and so they don’t make moral judgements Stage of Heteronomous Morality (aged three – six years) Children at this stage think rules are absolute and unchangeable, and the goodness and badness of an action is judged largely on the basis of its consequences rather than by taking intent into account. Stage of Autonomous Morality (from around six or seven) Children at this stage now see rules as more changeable and intentions are taken into account. Children also start to believe that it is possible to break rules and get away with it, whereas earlier they tended to think they will always be found out and possibly punished. Researchers from Europe and America have tested some of Piaget’s theories and have concluded that distinct stages of development do seem to exist however, other research found that children do not see all rules as being equally important as Piaget thought they did. Heteronomous Morality, also known as moral realism, means when the child is subject to another’s laws or rules. Children think that rules must be obeyed no matter what the circumstances. A child at this stage will think that rules are only made by authority figures, such as, parents and teachers. Two other features that are displayed in moral reasoning at this stage are, first they expect bad behaviour to be punished in some way, they believe that the punishment should be expiatory – the wrongdoer must make amends for the crime by paying with some kind of suffering. They have the view that the amount of punishment should match the badness of the behaviour. Secondly, if the bad behaviour goes undetected then the child believes in immanent justice – where any misfortune occurring after the bad behaviour can be seen as a punishment. For example, if a child tells a lie and gets away with it, then later trips and falls, the younger child could consider this as a punis hment. In general, they believe punishment should be fair and that wrongdoing will always be punished in some way. Autonomous Morality, which means when the child is subject to one’s own laws and rules. It involves moral relativism whereby the child comes to realise that rules evolve from social relationships. Due to the child ‘decentring’ and their developed ability to think more flexibly about moral issues, they have began to realise it is important to take other people’s opinions into account. At this stage a child will have developed the understanding that sometimes rules of morality can be broken in certain reasonable circumstances. They believe in reciprocal punishment, whereby the punishment should fit the crime. For example, if a child takes another child’s sweets, the first child should be deprived of their sweets or should make it up to the victim in some other way. This is known as the principle of reciprocity. Children will also have learnt at this stage that wrongdoers often avoid punishment, diminishing any belief in immanent justice. They see punishment as a method of making the offender understand the nature of the crime and that punishment is also a deterrent. The move from heteronomous morality to autonomous morality is influenced by two factors. Children around the age of seven begin to move on from the pre operational stage of an illogical and an egocentric way of thinking to more logical and flexible way of thinking, in the operational stage. Their growing awareness that other people have different views allows them to develop more mature moral reasoning. However, moral development lags at least one to two years behind cognitive development because the whole process depends on the cognitive changes occurring first. Kohlberg expanded Piaget's theory to form a theory that also explained the development of moral reasoning. While Piaget described a two-stage process of moral development, Kohlberg’s theory outlined six stages within three different levels. Kohlberg extended Piaget’s theory, proposing that moral development is a continual process that occurs throughout the lifespan. A study by Colby et al (1983) criticised Piaget’s assumption that children of ten and eleven years old had reached an adult level of moral reasoning. Piaget was always focusing on what an average child was capable of achieving so he neglected the idea of great variations between the individual child’s ways of thinking. In general, Piaget’s cognitive theory has been criticised for the methods of investigation not being as precise as they could have been. Methods he used were seen as complicated, leading critics to think he under estimated younger children’s capabilities of what they could and could not do. This was because later research went on to conclude that children could actually take other motives into consideration, when they understood what motives were involved. Despite criticism, Piaget’s work is still regarded as a revolutionary step forward in the way we understand how children think. It has led to a much more realistic ways of understanding children’s moral development. Many attempts to test Piaget’s theories from researchers around the world have resulted in acceptance that some of his views and methods do appear to exist.
